Active Christians Today
University of Toledo | Bowling Green State University
ALPHA COURSE HAS ARRIVED! One of the highlights of this semester has been our Wednesday large group gathering. We have been taking students through the “Alpha Course.” The course goes over foundational elements of Christianity, includes testimonies, and sets the group up for discussions that have been amazing! We’ve been blessed to welcome many different perspectives to our discussion. We have a Muslim along with an atheist and a student who is a believer from China- and an advocate of Chinese Communism. As you can imagine, our discussions are fascinating! Here are what our students have recently said about Alpha:
“Alpha taught me that no matter what you are going through, God will always be with you wherever you are in life.”
“I really liked how Alpha took topics that are vital to being a Christian and showed them from different perspectives.”
“Alpha showed me that God truly does work miracles no matter how small we think they are.”
“Alpha reminded me about the importance of having a loving, God-like community to surround you.”
ACT at BG recently hosted a night of prayer for the persecuted church, but we did things a bit differently. We wanted students to feel what it is like for our brothers and sisters around the world, so we pretended to be an underground church in China meeting to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters. Here are students’ insights:
“It’s one thing to learn about the persecuted church, but it is another to act like the persecuted church, hiding behind coolers, crammed in a small back room in the ACT basement.”
“It felt so real, from the first text with the password to sitting on the floor in the basement. I learned the Bible is so beautiful that Christians often meet in hiding because their government is so threatened by the freedom in Christ!”
“It’s so hard to think of spending your entire life going to church in secret!”
“It reminded me I am so fortunate to be alive in a time and place where I can worship openly. I feel sorrow for my brothers and sisters across the world who cannot worship like this.”
“Their hunger for God, and willingness to risk it all gives me great hope!”
“It helps me find more joy in the blessings and freedom I have and motivates me to use it more urgently. With so much at stake, they worship because God is so good! This thought alone is more powerful to me than any service I have attended in a long time.”
JESUS! We pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world. May they fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel! May they discover your abundant life in the midst of incredible darkness. You are the God who raises the dead, what can man do! Empower them to love their enemies! May they fix their eyes on YOU!
